For decades, Gary’s artesian well has brought people from near and far to collect from its cool, bubbling spout, rumored to have medicinal properties.  Over the years it has become Gary’s little-known hot spot for locals to access free, clean, water.

The water “flows from the ground as a nonstop gift of nature to Indiana residents,” said Kimmie Gordon, founder of Brown Faces Green Spaces. On Saturday, Gordon invited community members to the natural spring to tell stories of its legend and foster community over their shared love of the great outdoors.

“In an era when bottled water makes billions, this water is a gift from the Earth,” Gordon said. “It’s an open-access artesian well that is chock-full of minerals that is considered to be an endangered artifact.”  Looking ahead, the well is part of an emerging 800-acre restoration project by the Wetlands Initiative — a Chicago-based nonprofit dedicated to restoring and protecting wetlands.

What an incredible day to celebrate the planet, practice self-care, and learn about all the amazing environmental programs taking place around the region at our 6th Annual Earth Day Kickoff event at Marquette Park in Gary.

Over 20 incredible NW Indiana & Chicagoland organizations came together to share their ongoing environmental & conservation efforts through interactive eco-education stations, activities, and exhibits at our 2025 Planet Palooza.

“Boots on the Ground: A Reclamation of Earth, Health, & Self ” – paid tribute to our planet, our health, and our own wellness, as we continue forging ahead, learning and growing with resilience and unity, to address the impacts of climate change and justice in our direct communities.  ♻️🌳💚🌍
